The history of rubberwood

The rubber tree comes from the tropical Amazon. In 1877 the British took a few seedlings to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), south-east of India. They thrived there and were sent on to Singapore and Malaysia. By the early 20th century there were already plantations in Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia. Today it’s grown in thirty countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America.

This tree grows fast and can reach 25–30 metres in height, which is why it’s considered very sustainable. Once it stops producing sap, it’s processed into affordable, eco-friendly timber, according to Oak Plus Furniture. When tapped, the tree yields latex, the raw material for rubber, hence its name. Its wood has a density similar to that of ash and hard maple, and in many ways it’s comparable to teak.

Caring for your wooden pieces

1. Wash by hand in hot water with a little mild soap.

2. Dry with a cloth rather than leaving to air-dry.

3. Every two months, rub in a little oil with a soft cloth.
